We all know Armies has the main role to make their country stronger and secure in the world. Every year, a big fortune is allocated out of the funds for fighting battles. Countries take special actions to strengthen themselves militarily. If we try to match the armies of the different nations to measure the countries with strongest armies, we can have a fair idea about the military forces of countries by taking into account the advanced technologies implemented, arsenal in their possession training, power and the number of allies, capacity of the army, budget allocated, etc. many organizations, such as Business Insider, manage their own studies to rank the military powers. Japan is at number 10. It was the country of Samurais, and it has the leading military force in WW-2. Interestingly, its peace agreement at the end of WW-II bans it from having an aggressive army. In response to its increasing disputes with the ever-expanding China, Japan started military expansion, the first time in 40 years, placing the new base on outer islands. It doubled its military spending, the first time in 11 years, to 49.1 billion Dollars, the world’s 6th highest. It has more than 247,000 active personnel and almost 60,000 in reserve. Including 1,595 aircraft, it is the 5th biggest air force. The army also has 131 warships.

This country parts its border with North Korea which has a very powerful army. And that’s why it’s a constant threat to South Korea. But, its offensive neighbour is not its issue. To meet the expanding armament of China and Japan, South Korea has been increasing its defence expenditure, which is now 34 billion Dollars. It’s managed 640,000 active personnel and 2,900,000 additional personnel in the reserve, and the 6th largest air force with 1,393 aircraft, including small 166 ships. The country has about 15,000 land weapons, covering rocket systems, as well as 2,346 tanks. It routinely associates in military training with the US.

Germany has the strongest economic forces in the world, but despite spending around 45 million Dollars per year, but from the past few years the army’s condition seems to have depreciated. Because, the generation born and growing up in the 1950-60s were against war and its cruelties, and being punished by countries with strongest armies was also the reason of fear in youth, and discouraged the people from joining the army. In 2011, compulsory military service was cancelled to stop the country from being a militarized country. Now Germany has only 183,000 active frontline personnel and 145,000 reservists, with 710 aircraft in total, and on-land armament of nearly 5,000 of different kinds.

France is another country to follow Germany’s point because, it took the decision to ‘effectively ‘freeze’ its military spend, and cut down on the defence jobs by 10% in 2013, for using this money for technologically advanced equipment. Its current military budget stands at 43$ a year, which is 1.9% of the country’s GDP, much under the spending aim as set by NATO. Over 220,000 regular forces combine with reservists to form a force of about 500,000. Germany has over 1,000 aircraft, with 9,000 ground vehicles. Even if these do not make France an impressive army, its position in the EU and UN, a total 290 nuclear weapons, and important deployments strengthen the country.

This country is the members of the EU, also has a plan of lessening the size of the armed forces by 20% between 2010 and 2018, and applies fewer cuts to the Royal Navy and RAF. The defence resource of the UK currently stands at 54 billion Dollars. It has a normal force of only about 205,000, with the air force of 908 aircraft, and an even smaller navy of 66 ships. Despite all this, the army of the UK is still a strong one, because of its superior training, equipment and main strengths of having its 160 nuclear weapons. In 2020, The Royal Navy is preparing to put to service HMS Queen Elizabeth. It is an aircraft carrier, designed to carry 40 F-35B joint strike fighters around the world.

India has put its huge population to use, and built an army of a sizeable 3.5 million, covering 1.325 million active military. The large size of the Indian military is one of the reasons why it has always persisted among the countries with best armies in the world. The main force of the army has 16,000 land vehicles which include 3,500 tanks, with 1,785 aircraft and nuclear weapons. Its ballistic missiles can knock all of the Pakistan or most of the China. Its defence budget stands at 46 billion Dollars, but it is anticipated to rise, in a drive to improve the military power and become the 4th biggest spender by 2020. It is the world’s biggest military goods importer.

China’s defence budget stands at 126 billion Dollars, and constant drive to spend massively in defence, there is expected to be an extension of the budget by 12.2%. It has an impressive size of the army, with 2.285 million active personnel and a further 2.3 million reservists, making it the world’s massive land force, with nearly 25,000 land vehicles. China recently received sensitive information about the new F-35, and is noted for successfully taking sensitive military technology.


Its defence budget stands at 76.6 billion Dollars, and anticipated to increase 44% more in the next 3 years. In fact, the military spending of Kremlin has progressed by about a third since 2008, since Vladimir Putin took charge of Russia in 2000. The Russian army has shown firm growth since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago. Russia has 766,000 active frontline personnel and 2.5 million on the reserve force, though the soldiers receive ordinary training. The man force is backed by 15,500 tanks. And it makes Russia the largest tank force in the world, but most of the equipment is aging, like the other equipment. The country is the world’s leader, having almost 8,500 active nuclear warheads.



The US spends a huge 612.5 billion $ on the military, combining more than the other 9 countries’ budgets. It owns a remarkably large army with 1.4 million soldiers, and a further 800,000 reservists. To balance the active ground force holding well-trained men and women in uniforms, its biggest lead is that it is the world leader in aircraft production, with a fleet of 19 aircraft carriers, while the carriers run the world together sum up to 12. The US executes cutting-edge technology like the Navy’s new railgun, with 7,500 nuclear warheads at its end. No wonder it is the no.1 military force since WW-II.
